Acid Dub Studies by Om Unit
Sumptuous and cinematic
Third album of originals from Om Unit in his outstanding Acid Dub Studies series is easily his strongest yet. Peppered with quality touches all the way through, from the crashing drums that kickstart The Chase and the Acid rain visions on Circulate / Thunderflies to the breakout melody halfway through Usurper and the sumptously cinematic flair of Altitude. (That latter track sits very comfortably alongside the recent Stillhead work A Real Piece of Work.) With zoned-out opening and closing tracks, there's a proper arc as well. The highlight for me is Ascension with its driving rhythms and frazzled Acid stew.
For fans of the Noda and Wolfers albums Evil Fades in Echo and Tascam Space Season and the Oracle Sound series from Richard Norris.
