Moktar - Moktar EP

Review

Moktar EP by Moktar

East meets West on jaunty debut EP

Four artists mashing up Eastern and Western influences in their music at the moment:

  • sepehr
  • Kems Kriol
  • Fatima Al Qadiri
  • Mera Bhai

Joining this strong quartet is Australian/Egyptian DJ and producer Moktar, who explores electronic music through the lens of Arabic percussion and instrumentation. Tablas, twanging guitars, slick loops, Egyptian trumpets, Bass rhythms and vocal snippets come together in sweet unison with a prevailing party vibe. Opening track Silk typifies his approach, perfectly sampling and cutting together these diverse sounds and styles while tackling the subject of the racist abuse he faced growing up in Oz. A strong debut.
