On Fire Island by Saapato
Nature and our fragile ecology
Back in 2017, immersing ourselves in the tropical isolation of Wild Palms by Iguana Moonlight, we were presented with desert island meditations
, a romantic view of life detached from humanity. With On Fire Island, the new album from Saapato (real name Brendan Principato) the meditations are pragmatic, instead focusing on the fragile ecology of the outer barrier islands. His aim was to capture:
the raw, unyielding forces of wind, waves, and the whispering grasses that define Fire Island's rare and rapidly disappearing ecosystems
The result is 49 minutes of deeply contemplative soundscapes that force the listener to question the fragility of our natural world. Certainly makes me listen to Wild Plams in a different light.
