Cali EP by Kris Wadsworth
The Techno prankster removes his mask to reveal a more serious side
After his cheesy (but still rather decent) debut album Life & Death in 2012, I had Kris Wadsworth neatly pigeonholed as a capable producer but also a bit of a prankster (Famous Anus anyone?). Popularity, his sophomore effort two years later, still provided plenty of quirky vocal snippets but made positive inroads, veering to the serious side of his persona, particularly demonstrating his keen Techno credentials on the title track. Devoid of humour but not rugged floor fillers, third long player Infiltrator arrived in 2016 and his transformation into a no-nonsense producer was almost complete.
New EP Cali follows this pattern with four tracks that don't piss around; raw analogue machinations designed purposefully to work the floor. High and Vibe are robust DJ tools while lead track Cali strides emotively with its rising melody and wriggly bassline. Closer Omen uses some squelchy Acid for a dub vibe. Sounds at home on Andre Kronert's Odd Even Techno label.
