The Phantomatic Coast by Conflux Coldwell
Capturing the past in the present
Before the North sea reclaims vast swathes of the east coast of England, Michael C Coldwell set out to capture the essence of what once was, the roads to nowhere, the monumental sound mirrors and pillboxes teetering on the edges of cliffs
, through field recordings, photography and eventually a short film (Views from Sunk Island). The Phantomatic Coast is more than just the film score though, it goes much deeper, posing questions about memory, mythology and mother nature. Largely Ambient, the sound pieces balance subtle tension with fleeting melody; the ghostly synths drenched in sea spray perfectly capturing the past in the present.
