More hot cakes from the electronic music bakery
Aleksei Nikitin - Vesna
Russian artist Aleksei Nikitin, aka Nocow, turns in an excellent EP for UNDERTHESEA, the label run by Grego After All. Comprising four originals and a remix of the title track by Daniël Jacques, it's a quality release that works House vibes with a Techno undercurrent. Vesna is the standout moment with its catchy, melancholic melody, which you may even find yourself singing along to!
Sebastian Gandera - Contre-Sens
More rich pickings from the rediscovered back catalogue of French composer Sebastian Gandera, courtesy of Australian label Efficient Space. Two tracks, spanning close to an hour, composed of old tapes, demos and sampling ideas, with Gandera’s piano a particular highlight when it crops up throughout. Not entirely sure who is responsible for "mixing" the disparate recordings but they've handled the material diligently.
Sierra - Gone
Booshank - Operating With A Blown Mind
Further Australian goodness, this time from the consistently high-quality label Butter Sessions based in Melbourne. Booshank is Paul Graham, the man behind label Couch Acid Recordings, and he makes sweet and intricate House with a sad shot of melody throughout its core. Opening track F.T.H. represents his sound well. Japanese artist Gonno remixes second track Andy. Lovely stuff.
Vanity Productions - Only The Stars Come out at Night
From the man behind Posh Isolation, Damien Dubrovnik and The Empire Line, Christian Stadsgaard returns to his solo project Vanity Productions with a three track EP of sublime, Ambient beauty. Only The Stars Come Out At Night presents "a reflection of life in the city during warm summer nights. Stargazing, ecstasy, early evening dreaming, chilled intoxication, languid lust". A fascinating project, which comes accompanied with three separate videos, directed by Anastasia Sif Karkazis, that "meditate on scenes of nature, industry and technology, and the architecture that traces the edge of each".
Anabiosis: Injection A
Following the recent Tom Hades Acrab EP, Russian Techno powerhouse label Korpus 9 boost their profile further with Anabiosis: Injection A EP, another EP of uncompromising Techno from Nikola Gala, Re:Axis, Hanubis and Confluence. The Hanubis contribution is the highlight, working monster Acid riffs with 131 BPM.
G-Prod and Erell Ranson - Extrasoul For Your Mind
Extrasoul For Your Mind - inaugural release from Belgian label Nightflight Records sets a high standard. French artists G-Prod and Erell Ranson share an EP of two tracks apiece that trade in deep and soulful Detroit vibes. G-Prod's melodic Dub Techno The Rites Of Glamounja is superb.
Mike Golding - The Beginning
Mike Golding, the other half of celebrated Electronic duo B12 (with Steve Rutter, who's been busy with his Firescope Records label of late) returns to the fray with a beautiful EP on Delsin. It may be ten years since his last release (as B12) but The Beginning feels right at home: soft pads, emotive chords and swooning melodies juxtaposed with the familiar B12 IDM-style, makes for an extremely pleasant outing.
Yagya - Stormur
The Ambient Dub Techno producer finds a fitting home on A Strangely Isolated Place (ASIP) for his new Deep Techno album Stormur. Atmospheric, slow-building, momentous music, smoothly delivered, like a DJ set. Truly one of those albums that transports the mind and soul.
Luke Hess - Supercinema 002
US producer on top Dub Techno form for the second release on Supercinema Records (following label boss Alfredo Mazzilli's introductory EP last year). Fellow US producer Patrik Russell offers an alternative Dub angle on second track Hidden Dimension. What stands out most for me though is the excellent artwork provided by Graziano Umile (co-label boss, along with Mazzilli). Check out the first EP cover.
Paula Temple - Edge of Everything
Really banging, visceral debut album from the UK producer, hitting you really hard one minute, caressing you gently the next. While bludgeoning you with satisfying rhythms throughout, there's a subtle undercurrent of control prevalent in the form of rumbling textures, colourful noises and perfect pace. All round: an excellent album.
