Queen of Nowhere by Kourtney Roy + Trance Farmers
Another extraordinary meeting of artistic minds
If you've been paying attention in recent years, you'll know that French label IIKKI coordinate collaborations between artists (one visual and one musical) to produce an artwork that stimulates on various levels: as a book, an album and a combination of both simultaneously. There's been a few excellent pairings to date but this one with Kourtney Roy and Trance Farmers is easily my favourite.
Canadian photographer Kourtney Roy snaps colourful and well-composed images that look like film-stills and carry a narrative that's loaded with provocative meaning and other-world realism. Although contemporary in subject, the kitsch, bold colours lend a certain 70s vibe which is a fitting compliment to the twangtastic, psychedelic Rock ballads of Dayve Samek's Trance Farmers. The twelve tracks are essentially a 'best of' of the US musicians first few releases, proving to be the perfect introduction to his distinctive oeuvre. Simply superb.
