Dome by Lara Jones
Relax, do it
Like Kevin Richard Martin, Lara Jones uses saxophone as a mechanism for exploring Jazz-tinted forms of experimental music; good examples of her work include Ensō and Pillow (rework). While a share of her previous work verges on 'challenging', this new EP Dome is purposely accessible and immersive.
With a commission from the Jerwood Arts Jazz Encounters Fellowship programme, the goal was to present her music in a tranquil public space (specifically an enclosed 5m geodesic dome) along with visual and olfactory stimulation. Saxophone may be involved in the mix somewhere but the layers of gentle sound, glitchy rhythms, shimmering cymbals and birdsong dominate. Beautiful.
