loscil - Monument Builders

Monument Builders by loscil

Scott Morgan with a new album of emotive ambient sounds

Inspired by an old video tape of experimental film Koyaanisqatsi, and "the time-tarnished visuals and the pitch warble on Philip Glass’s epic score" that accompanied it, the new album from Scott Morgan holds an unmistakably enlightened sensitivity. Every detail, from the beautiful textured artwork and the unexpected samples to the haunting melodies and the overwhelming sense of Zen that descends with every listen, feels thoroughly thought through. Composed during a period when Morgan was dealing with tough life-and-death family issues he's managed to imbue a deep sense of life to the seven tracks on Monument Builders; at once thought provoking and reassuring.

Like an older, wiser sibling to Steve Hauschildt or S U R V I V E, the blend of driving synths, wind instruments and sweeping assonance works. Central track Straw Dogs, inspired by the anti-humanist writings of influential philosopher John Gray, reinforces the message that life is a balancing act, even though we have little control of the outcome. All we can do is carry on. Sit back. Listen.
