Umfang - Symbolic Use of Light

Review

Symbolic Use of Light by Umfang

Detached Techno

Without samples and primarily using a single device (the Boss DR-202 drum machine) Emma Olson, aka New York producer and Discwoman co-founder Umfang, has created an album of cold and clinical Techno. Bare naked, no fluff, nine solid tracks that are lean but definitely not (just) functional; rhythms are chisel sharp and melodies are subtle. Take Weight for example, a simple drum pattern sitting atop a ghostly synthesiser refrain or Ambient interlude Path that brings balance to the flow.

Where Is She is the highlight for me, and perfectly exemplifies the Umfang aesthetic, its rigid, four to the floor thump, working in unison with a melody composed of pitched-up basslines, demonstrates Olson's true artistic endeavours, successfully removing the superflous from her compositions and leaving only the necessary. Detached but vibrant Techno.
