Vast post-classical soundscapes of tension and desolate beauty
Emika has announced that her ambitious VEGA project, initially launched in 2021 but delayed for various reasons (including the pandemic, sickness and relocating from Berlin) is back on track and will see a release on 29th November this year. Expect a career encompassing array of musical styles, incorporating electronic elements, piano, neoclassical, reworks and collaborations.
Noted, 20 Oct 2024, 12:06I missed this Alva Noto remix from earlier in the year - it's a track called Hvid, taken from Lindstrand's excellent 2023 album Klangland. Inspired by Swedish jazz of the 1960s, piano was a key element in the original but Alva Noto extracts the piano and adds contemplation through texture and subtle noise. Beautiful!

Music where technology, nature and biology collide
Better late than never, I've finally heard 13 Rabbits, the intriguing debut album from German artist Moritz Fasbender, aka Friederike Bernhardt, in which she combines piano and Prophet synthesiser to create a hybrid of film soundtrack and experimental classical compositions. And while Brandt Brauer Frick appear on one of the more high energy tracks, it's a largely downbeat affair, best suited for more introspective moments.
Noted, 23 Oct 2022, 16:39The enigmatic artist known as Eva Kierten is back for a third release on Scottish label Other Forms Of Consecrated Life. It's a twenty minute piece called The Metallic Ratio and is composed of piano loops softened by quietly seering strings, and underpinned with field recordings and subtle electronics. It's a mesmerising mix of ingredients.
Fans of Yann Tiersen and Olafur Arnalds will love this beautiful piano-led track from Tiny Fighter member Tim Spelman.
Out now via Filter.
Goodness me, how about this for a collaboration? Plastikman and Chilly Gonzales have teamed up for a reimagining of Hawtin’s 1998 album Consumed, called Consumed In Key. Check out the taster track here:
