Fat Jon - Hundred Eight Stars
Re-release of Fat Jon's hip-hop instrumentals is worth investigating
I get the usual mixed feelings on discovering a well established artist for the first time: annoyed at missing out for years but happy to finally get there! This is the case with American hip hop producer Fat Jon, who I discover is a peer of DJ Shadow, producer of (at least) seven hip-hop albums and a master of instrumentals. Although originally released in 2009, through the efforts of Project Mooncircle, we luckily have (another) chance to appreciate his excellent collection of hip-hop instrumentals entitled Hundred Eight Stars, with this vinyl re-release.
Compiled from his considerable back catalogue, it comfortably nestles alongside other classics of the genre, like Remedies by The Herbaliser, DJ Shadow's Entroducing and J Dilla's Donuts. And if you're looking for even more of the same, also check out Clams Casino's Mixtape 2 and the dBridge selection dBridge Vs Maschine Vol 1.
